THE TACKLEBOX

A Historic Bait Shop Reimagined

Open vintage blue tackle box containing fishing lures, fishing line spool, and various fishing gear, placed on a weathered wooden dock.

The Frankfort Tacklebox has been a community cornerstone for decades—serving not just as a place to buy bait and tackle, but as a gathering point for fishers, families, and visitors who love the waters of northern Michigan.

We have a multi-year vision to refresh and revitalize the business while honoring its long-standing heritage. The 2026 season will focus on essential updates, renewed branding, and reestablishing strong community ties through the existing charter services and new outdoor education programs.

A place where local history meets lake-life culture.

The Tacklebox renovation is more than restoring an old bait shop — it’s about preserving a beloved landmark and transforming it into a gathering place that honors Frankfort’s fishing tradition.

Our Vision:

  • Keep the iconic character: weathered wood, vintage signage, and the spirit of a true Northern Michigan bait shop

  • Add modern functionality: higher ceilings, educational displays about the ecology of Lake Michigan, signage, lighting

  • Create a welcoming hub for locals, anglers, families, and curious visitors with an expanded seating area outside

  • Celebrate the storytelling culture of Frankfort — the wisdom passed from generation to generation on the docks

  • The shop becomes the “entry point” for all other phases of development.

The Tacklebox is where locals feel at home and visitors feel initiated.

A place you stop before any adventure — on the water or in life.
